ANDREW CARNEGIE

Industrialist and Philanthropist

Andrew Carnegie was a Scottish-American industrialist and through his work in the American steel industry in the late 19th century, became the richest man of his time. He developed a reputation as a hard employer known as a strike breaker who paid his workers unfairly. Ultimately though it was his work as a philanthropist which is his lasting legacy. By the time of his death in 1919 he had given away his entire fortune in order to establish Libraries and concert halls throughout America and the British Empire.
